KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 — The Special Committee to Review Alternative Sentences to the Mandatory Death Penalty submitted to the government its report containing recommendations on the matter.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said former chief justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum presented to him the findings of the panel’s study, contained in the 128-page report.

“My office is now studying the contents of the report, as well as the recommendations made by the special committee. In the coming weeks, a paper on the findings and recommendations will be tabled before the cabinet.

“All further actions with regard to the report and its recommendations will be based on the cabinet’s collective decision,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Liew said the panel held town halls and public consultations nationwide from September 20 last year to January 31.

“International experts, including from Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the UK, were also consulted.

“I express my heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the government to the special committee for their outstanding effort in reviewing alternative sentences to the mandatory death penalty. It was no easy task.”
