SUBANG JAYA, Jan 22 — The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) will not build any permanent structures for designated smoking areas and will only provide proper disposable bins for smokers to discard their cigarette buds.

MPSJ said having to build permanent structures for the smoking areas, located nearby 4,000 eateries within Subang Jaya, would be a difficult task and costly.

Its president Noraini Roslan said by providing the bins, the local council hopes that it would discipline the smokers and encourage them to keep the public space clean.

"Providing such smoking areas would be better than building a permanent structure as it would be costly.

"Therefore, we agree with the allocation provided by the Housing and Local Government Ministry's (KPKT) by placing proper disposal bins in the smoking areas," she told a press conference after chairing MPSJ's first monthly assembly for this year today.

On January 7, KPKT said that it would allocate RM1 million for local authorities to provide covered smoking areas in specified common areas deemed suitable.

The ministry estimated that each smoking area would cost about RM5,000.
