BEIJING, Jan 21 — A fourth death from the new coronavirus is being reported in China’s Wuhan, where the current outbreak of the virus started, announced Wuhan health authorities and reported by Sputnik news agency.

According to a statement from the city health committee, as of midnight Jan 19, a total of 198 coronavirus cases have been registered, 25 people have been discharged from hospital, while four people have died from the illness.

The latest death occurred late on Sunday. The 89-year-old man who died from the virus first developed symptoms on Jan 13 and was taken to the hospital on Jan 18.

A total of 169 people are currently being treated, nine of them are in critical condition, according to Wuhan health authorities.

On Monday, China’s National Health Commission confirmed human-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus. Previously, it was thought that the virus could only be contracted from exposure to sick animals.

Reports of people testing positive for the new coronavirus strain have been coming in from South Korea, Japan and Thailand.

Temperature screening has been introduced at some airports to monitor for people possibly infected with the virus, which causes a type of pneumonia.
