ALOR SETAR, Jan 9 — The Malaysian Border Security Agency (Aksem) in Kedah has foiled 63 attempts to smuggle goods of various items worth more than RM15 million last year.

Kedah Aksem commander Abdul Latif Abdul Rahman said the number of cases last year was less than in 2018 which recorded 196 cases involving goods worth RM13.9 million.

“Even though the number of cases last year was less than in 2018, the confiscated value was higher as it involved more taxable goods.

“Among the taxable goods were cigarettes, liquor, clone vehicles and agriculture products,” he told Bernama when met here recently.

He said among the reasons for the drop in the number of cases was the tight enforcement by Aksem at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex.

Abdul Latif added that beginning this year, Aksem will also put up permanent roadblocks at the Durian Burung ICQS near Padang Terap to further curb smuggling activities.

He also urged members for the public with any information on smuggling activities to contact Aksem.
