SHAH ALAM, Jan 2 — Education Minister Maszlee Malik has today officially announced his resignation from the Cabinet effective tomorrow.
In a press conference held at the Education Ministry in Putrajaya, the announcement was made following media reports earlier quoting unnamed sources on the submission of his resignation letter to the prime minister this afternoon.
“After my meeting with Tun (Dr Mahathir Mohamad), upon his advice and as a statesman, with a heavy heart, I, Maszlee Malik, return my post to the Prime Minister effective 3 January,” Maszlee said at the press conference.
The Simpang Renggam MP and member of the Bersatu supreme leadership council was appointed as the Education Minister on May 21, 2018.
Following his announcement, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad through the Prime Minister's Office in a statement had confirmed Maszlee’s resignation as the Cabinet minister and said the vacancy will be filled and announced in the near future.
“Maszlee Malik has handed over his resignation letter to me as the Education Minister, today.
“I have received the letter which is effective on January 3. I thank him for his service during his tenure as a Cabinet member,” the statement read.
