SEMENYIH, Dec 26 — The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNHEP) warned traders from hiking up the price of school supplies.

Its Deputy Enforcement Director Azman Adam said the ministry is monitoring the price control nationwide, which involves 3,030 categories of school-related goods.

He said the move was necessary to curb traders from increasing the price of school supplies indiscriminately.

“So far, we have issued 220 notices against errant traders across the country.

“We have also given these offenders five days to justify the price hike,” he told reporters after heading an operation to conduct price checks at a hypermarket here today.

Azman pointed out that the nation-scale price check operation has started since December 18.

He said errant traders can be investigated under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which carries a fine of up to RM100,000 and up to five years jail if convicted.

Meanwhile, during the operation, 20 personnel from the KPDNHEP Selangor conducted price checks on school supply goods such as uniforms, school bags, scarves, socks and shoes.
