Selangor govt identifies measures to resolve Sungai Semenyih pollution

SHAH ALAM, Dec 23 — The Selangor state government has identified several measures to resolve the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant odour pollution.

The measures were identified following an emergency meeting held by Selangor Environment, Green Technology, Science and Consumer Affairs Executive councillor Hee Loy Sian, Air Selangor and Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) earlier today.

The meeting was chaired by Selangor Mentri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Mentri Besar Office in a statement said the cleaning work in Sungai Semenyih involves sucking out water from Tasik Idaman Sungai Buloh and streaming it back to Sungai Semenyih in order to reduce the impact of odour pollution in the Semenyih River.

“Water from the Semenyih Dam also will be channelled to Sungai Semenyih in order to flush out the contaminated water from the river,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, clean water from the Air Langat 2 water treatment will be supplied to the water reserve terminal in Bangi.

“This is to cater 55,564 consumer accounts from 104 areas who are in need of clean waters,” it added.

Some 70 water tanks and 16 additional lorries carrying clean water has been dispatched to the affected areas.

The statement government also warned that it will not hesitate to take legal action against perpetrators behind the incident.

On Saturday, the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant was forced to shut down due to odour pollution, which was caused by irresponsible people disposing illegal waste with solvent odour at the inlet around the Indah Water Konsortium's plant.

Following the closure, 366 areas with 328,957 consumer accounts in Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang were affected.
