SHAH ALAM, Nov 13 — The low self-sufficiency level (SSL) in Selangor remains low due to the low food production in the state, which is at its bare minimum, the Selangor legislative assembly was told today.
Selangor Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim said the state only exports less than half of its food produce while the remaining are imported.
“Selangor exports only 25 to 30 per cent of food produced, while the rest is imported.
“The figure shows that the food production in the state is very low,” he said in response to a question asked by Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad in the state legislative assembly here today.
He said that the highest exported fresh produce include coconuts and chicken eggs, while beef is only at 3.8 per cent.
Izham added that the state government would work on improving the SSL in Selangor.
“We are committed to ensuring that the food supply improves better for the generations to come,” he said.
