SHAH ALAM, Nov 4 — The Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari says there is no need to increase the free water scheme offered to the people living in the state from 20 to 30 cubic metres.
He said this was because people of Selangor uses an average of 20 to 25 cubic metres of water per month.
“According to a study made, the water usage in the state is the highest in comparison to our neighbouring states.
“Currently we use an estimated 222 litre of water daily, while the recommended usage is only 165 litre per day. Therefore, 20 metres cubic of free water is sufficient enough,” he said in response to a question on the Darul Ehsan water scheme at the state legislative assembly, here today.
In 2017, former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali had stated the per capita usage of treated water in the state was among the highest in the ASEAN region at 250 litre per day.
The recommended rate on per capita use of treated water by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is 165 litre per day.
He had then said that the total usage by the state is also higher than neighbouring countries, where in Singapore, the rate is only 150 litre a day and in Thailand, it is 90 litre per day.
