KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — In the effort to strengthen multilateralism, Malaysia has identified several issues which would be raised at the United Nations (UN) next year in conjunction with the world body’s 75th anniversary.
According to a Foreign Ministry statement yesterday, Malaysia has outlined reforms at UN and will participate in programmes such as 'Beijing+25 Summit’ and ‘Review Conference on the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)'.
“Malaysia is committed in continuing cooperation and engagement with UN based on the principles of national interests as well as principles enshrined in the UN Charter,” the statement said.
Today, 74 years after the world body was formed, Malaysia is of the view that UN remains as the best platform to forge international cooperation based on the principle of mutual respect and international law in line with the UN Charter.
Malaysia and 192 UN members celebrated the 74th anniversary of the United Nations which signifies the date the UN Charter came into effect since 1945.
Malaysia became a member of the UN upon achieving independence in 1957 and it has consistently upheld the three pillars of UN namely peace, and security, human rights and development.
Apart from fulfilling the international commitments and responsibilities under the UN framework, Malaysia had also participated in UN peacekeeping missions since 1960 apart from contributing to the prevention of conflicts as well as preserving international peace especially when Malaysia became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for four times in 1965, 1989-1990, 1999-2000 and 2015 -2016.
From the development aspect, Malaysia is committed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which would be which was imbued in the 11th Malaysia Plan (2016-2020).
In the latest move, Malaysia has launched the Shared Prosperity Vision 2021 -2030 (WKB 2030) on Oct 5 to ensure equality in economic development at all levels by 2030 in line with Agenda 2030.
