BATU CAVES, Oct 15 — The Selangor state government will soon reveal an additional incentive in the Selangor Budget 2020 for those who conserve water.
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the move was introduced to encourage the public to be responsible when it comes to water consumption to converse the state’s water supply.
He said the state government plans to lessen water usage to 180 litres per person daily from the current 222 litres per day in Klang Valley.
“It would be good if we can reach this target in less than two years. We will first start with individual [households] and then move to offices and places of worship.
“We hope to achieve in reducing [water consumption] by 20 to 25 per cent. In continuing the efforts, we will announce an additional incentive in the state Budget 2020 to encourage saving water,” said Amirudin when met with reporters at the launch of the “Be A Water Consumption Warrior” campaign in Padang Awam, here today.
Also present at the event was Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) chief executive officer Suhaimi Kamaralzaman.
Amirudin said the state government lauded the efforts by Air Selangor in forming a Water Conservation Unit two years ago, which was set up to continuously run an awareness campaign for the public on the importance of saving water.
“Reports on water supply in most countries had shown that one out of four of the global population is currently facing water stress, in which water demand exceeds supply.
“But we are thankful that Selangor and Malaysia are not among those listed facing such a situation.
“Although we admit that we occasionally face water disruptions due to pipe bursts and contaminated raw water source, we are still able to manage the situation and not having to face water cuts for a long period,” he said.
