Govt intends to extend service of council members to one term

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 14 — The government intends to extend the term of service of local authority council (PBT) members to one term instead of one or two years as currently practised, said housing and local government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

She said the tenure of a term or five years was the same as that held by state assemblymen and members of Parliament.

"Some states offer one year, others for two years, and then the council members change. It will not be able to ensure that the knowledge gained is used, ” she told reporters after opening the 2nd Local Authority Empowerment Convention here today.

Meanwhile, Zuraida also called on all government officials, politicians and councillors to strengthen their comradeship and to eliminate suspicion among themselves.

"We have been in government for two years. We hope everyone will have understood each other better. By reducing suspicion, we are able to work better,” she said.
