TAWAU - The Marine Police Force (PPM) have detained a local man in the sea off Sungai Pukul near here for attempting to smuggle cooking oil, sugar, flour and cooking gas cylinders into Indonesia yesterday.

Sabah Region 4 PPM Commander ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said the detention of the suspect, aged 49 with 1,921 kilograms of cooking oil, 720 kg sugar, 612 kg flour and six Petronas gas cylinders was the result of information received from the Tawau Marine Intelligence Unit before a boat was detected and inspected by the Op Gelora patrol team at 4 pm.

“The suspect failed to provide the Purchase Letter of Scheduled Controlled Goods from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs for the items he had.

“The skipper of the boat also gave verbal evidence that the goods were to be delivered to Sungai Nyamuk, Indonesia," he said in a statement here today.

Mohamad Pajeri said the suspect and the confiscated items which were estimated to be worth RM41,250 were taken to the Tawau PPM Operations headquarters for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and read together with Article 3 (1) of the Control of Supply Regulations 1974.
