KUALA LUMPUR: Construction materials maybe released from the Sales and Service Tax (SST) exemption list soon.

Finance minister Lim Guan Eng said the government may reconsider the matter should there is still no changes in housing prices.

"We are not interested in seeing any rebates or what not given to buyers... What we want to see is a reduction kf house prices. That is all," he said.

This was said in his keynote speech during the Rehda (Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association) Institute CEO Series 2018 earlier.

Lim said the matter was being monitored closely by Putrajaya as property prices were among the priorities of the Pakatan Harapan administration.

Lim believes that his policy decisions would mostly affect the people when it comes to price of residencies.

"We want to see a reduce in residential properties in particular those priced at RM400,000 each and below," he said.

Previously, it was reported that developers Rehda President Soam Heng Choon said his group acknowledge

potential direct savings of 6% for buyers of residential, commercial and industrial properties.

However, they insisted that prices will not fall as a result of the exemption, saying material costs were only a minor portion of total construction costs.
