KUALA LUMPUR: The freeze on former Prime Minister Najib Razak's bank account was released as it does not have any ties to the investigations on SRC International and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said that the decision was made after investigations on the account have been concluded.
“MACC wants to stress that the freeze on the account was lifted not because of pressure from any parties, but because investigations on the account have been completed,” MACC said in a statement.
The anti graft agency added, there are other bank accounts that belonged to Najib which is tied to SRC International and 1MDB that wasn't frozen as the account has already been shut down before the investigations even took place in July 2015.
However, MACC said that investigations on the alleged RM2.6 billion fund transfer into Najib’s personal accounts are still on going.
MACC also pointed out that they have never publicised the freezing of Najib's account but the later kept quiet when the account was released.
"The commission never released any official statement in regards to the freezing of the account and MACC only confirmed the release of the account after the matter was raised by the media," the statement reads.
Earlier in July, Najib was charged with three charges of criminal breach of trust and another for abuse of power related to the alleged RM42 million misappropriation from SRC International.
