TI-M : PM, cabinet ministers and institution heads must declare assets

SHAH ALAM, MAY 17: Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) urged the Prime Minister, cabinet ministers and head of key institutions to declare their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

TI-M President, Datuk Akhbar Satar said it is to ensure transparency and accountability at the top level.

The MACC Chief Commissioner must declare his assets to the Parliament, according to him.

“This is necessary as a first step, before these individuals finally declare their assets openly online.

“There is no danger as every year the top 10 richest men (with their net values) in Malaysia in being published in the media,” he said in a statement.

Akhbar said all executive officials, Attorney-General (AG), Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Chief of Defense Forces as well as senior officials in public service must declare their assets.

The declaration should be done before and after taking office, with a net value analysis conducted periodically.

“The process must include assets belonging to partner, dependents and other close family members, as well as commercial interest or institutions involved,” he said.

Akhbar said a special unit consisting of forensic accounting specialists and investigators must be set-up for this.

He said their job would be to investigate and charge those who fail to comply.

“This practice would also prevent from fake allegations and increase publics’ trust,” he said.
