SHAH ALAM, MAY 11: The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) denied allegations of imposing assessment tax on night-market traders in Sungai Buloh.

MPS Corporate Department Director, Mohd Zin Masoad said on the contrary the tax is imposed on owners of permanent stalls.

He said, that was due to one of the owners requesting to be taxed to enable him to apply for business license.

“There are nine terrace stalls built by JKKK Kampung Sungai Buloh and six are individually owned and have been operating in the area since 2007.

“The tax was also imposed to ensure municipal services such as waste management can be organised for them,” he said in a statement.

Last May 3, Persatuan Perjuangan Masyarakat Kota (Perkata) made a protest against MPS who was allegedly imposing high assessment tax and burdening the hawkers.

Mohamad Zin said the tax implementation is covered by the law and authority given to MPS as a local authority.

He also added that assessment tax and the valuation is in line with the 1976 Local Government Act (Act 171) section XV (Rate and Valuation).

“An objection session was held last May 3 and MPS has listened to all the objections raised by the stall owners.

“Consideration on the objection appeal will be brought to the Finance Committee meeting and we will notify the stall owners on the decision upon approval from the MPS Full Council Meeting,” he said.
