Media is being intimidated

BY: MOHD SANY HAMZAN

AMANAH Nasional Youth takes a serious view on police’s action on Malaysia Dateline’s reporter, Mohd Arif Atan to be present at the Dang Wangi Police Headquarters in relation to his news coverage.

The action is an effort to intimidate media practitioners particularly reporters covering the nation’s development.

To us, police should not do that, on the contrary, they should investigate the news content.

Reporters should be given the full freedom to cover any issue particularly matters of importance to the country as well as malpractices.

To us, Arif Atan is a reporter who is committed on any issues that he covers, not just relating to political parties’ development, he is also very consistent in highlighting issues in the country and providing information to all the citizens.

Article 10 of the Constitution and the 1948 Universal Declaration of Basic Human Rights, which guarantees the right of journalists and reporters should be maintained. All parties should respect the rights of journalists such as those stipulated in the constitution.

Therefore, we urge the government and the police to stop such actions which we believe will be the beginning of allegations made against the media ahead of the 14th General Election (GE14).

AMANAH Nasional Youth also believe all media practitioners in this country strongly condemn this action!
