SHAH ALAM, FEB 1: In a recent study, 87 percent of the subjects agreed with the State Government’s decision to stop the use of polystyrene to pack food.
That result was equivalent to 43,342 participants who had expressed their concurrence, during the 16-day poll.
Meanwhile, only 13 percent or equivalent to 6,658 participants who disagreed.
Smart Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU) Deputy Director, Dr Fahmi Ngah said, the poll result indicates that Selangor citizens agree to the policy implemented by the State Government.
“The poll was carried out by SSDU through the Smart Selangor free wifi and it was only available to those who uses this wifi in Selangor.
“Obviously the rakyat agree with the policy to stop using polystyrene food containers which contribute to the waste issue on land and in our rivers,” he said when contacted.
Earlier, Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Exco, Elizabeth Wong informed, traders in Selangor no longer provide polystyrene food containers and plastic bags effective January 1.
“The traders will be supplied with visual materials to raise public’s awareness on the #BebasPlastik Campaign,” she said.
In an earlier survey, the State Government found that 71 percent of Selangor citizens are of the view that the ‘No Plastic Bag’ campaign only on every Saturday was insufficient.
Selangor started to implement the ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ in 2010, on every Saturday, supported by many big supermarkets, mini-markets and business premises.
