SHAH ALAM, DEC 29: So far, only 26% of wakaf land in Selangor can be utilised for development projects, according to Perbadanan Wakaf Selangor (PWS) Chief Executive Officer Abu Bakar Yang.
He said there are seven development projects in Klang, consisting of five projects through PWS’s subsidiaries and another two being developed in collaboration with external developers.
“Meanwhile, 45.9% of wakaf land are for specific purposes like surau, mosque and schools development. Besides that, 14% have been found to be of no use due to being too small in size and being in non-strategic locations.
“The rest are lands which require border breakdowns,” he said when met at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) briefing on December 29.
At the same time, Abu Bakar said PWS is now solving issues of misused wakaf land which has led to certain parties gaining free profit.
He said several discussions have been held to create a new agreement to prevent the same problem from recurring.
“PWS is solving this issue in a diplomatic way as it involves wakaf land. Nevertheless, several parties are taking advantage of this land for their own benefit.
“We will solve this matter amicably. Several discussions have been held and are still ongoing,” he said.
In 2015, PWS led efforts in developing a housing project on a piece of land in Seksyen 30 which had been given for wakaf since 1972.
Only 5% of wakaf land have been developed out of the 100 lots allotted for mosque, surau, schools and tahfiz centre development.
