Federal Court rejects Anwar’s case review

PUTRAJAYA, DEC 14: The Federal Court has rejected Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s appeal to dismiss the conviction and sentence on his Sodomy 2 case.

The Federal Court’s panel of five judges led by Chief Judge of Malaya, Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, unanimously made the decision upon finding no merit in the appeal based on Federal Court’s Method 1995 Rule 137.

Based on this decision, Anwar who has already served 10 months of his prison sentence in Sungai Buloh Prison, must continue to serve the rest of his 5-year sentence.

Federal Court Judges Tan Sri Hasan Lah, Tan Sri Abu Samah Nordin and Tan Sri Zaharah Ibrahim also presided.

On February 10, 2015, the Federal Court had upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision made on March 7, 2014 to convict Anwar and sentence him to 5 years in prison.

The prosecution was represented by a line-up of deputy public prosecutors led by Appellate and Trial Division Chief from the Attorney General's Chambers, Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid Anwar, while defence lawyers were led by Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram.
