SHAH ALAM, SEP 13: The decision by Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd to offer free Kelana Jaya-Gombak Light Rail Transit (LRT) rides is not the solution to the country’s public transport issues.

In fact, KEADILAN Vice President Nurul Izzah Anwar said Prasarana and the Federal Government need to provide a full report on the cause of the problem which is rampant nowadays.

“The report must be brought to Parliament to be debated through a special Parliamentary Committee on effective integration of public transportation, especially between Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

“The current network plus the MRT project must be monitored through this Parliamentary Committee which also needs to demand for cooperation from SPAD as the highest legislative body in the country on this issue,” she said in a statement.

She said the report would serve as the solution to best identify the root cause of this issue in order to prevent any recurrence.

“We must put in all efforts to prevent burdening consumers with operational issues and rising costs,” she said.

On September 7 and 9, the LRT service on the Kelana Jaya route suffered delays after electricity supply was disrupted, causing commuters to be stranded in the middle of the track.

Stranded commuters were also exposed to danger as they had to walk on the tracks in heavy rain to reach the next station.

The incident sparked public anger on the management and safety status of public transportation in this country.
