SHAH ALAM, March 31 — The state government has called for a transparent investigation and the imposition of maximum penalties on drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs, following the tragic death of a motorcyclist on Jalan Raya Barat, Klang, on Sunday (March 29).
The Menteri Besar's political secretary Saifuddin Shafi Muhammad said the incident, which claimed the life of 32-year-old Amirul Hafiz Omar, highlights the urgent need for stricter action to serve as a deterrent to society.
“The victim, a father of three, was killed after being struck by a driver believed to have violated road laws. In the interest of justice, the maximum sentence must be imposed to serve as a lesson to all.
“We pray that the late Amirul’s soul is blessed with divine mercy and that justice will be served through due legal process,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Saifuddin stressed that selfish behaviour and disregard for the safety of other road users cannot be tolerated, and offenders must face firm action under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Speaking in his capacity as the National Anti-Drugs Association's honorary secretary, he said the state government remains committed to ensuring the safety of road users, while supporting stricter enforcement against violations that can cost lives.
Previously, it was reported that the male suspect, in his 20s, has been remanded for four days to assist in further investigations, with the remand order issued by Magistrate Siti Zubaidah Mahat at the Klang Magistrate’s Court yestereday.
