No severe heatwave, but temperatures stay high in northern states

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 — No areas in the country have recorded a Level 2 heatwave as of 6 am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

Based on the department’s latest data, the whole of Perlis and nine districts in Kedah have, however, recorded Level 1 hot weather, or alert status.

The affected districts in Kedah are Sik, Padang Terap, Pendang, Pokok Sena, Kubang Pasu, Pulau Langkawi, Kota Setar, Kuala Muda and Baling.

Yesterday, several areas in Kedah, including Kota Setar, Kubang Pasu and Kuala Muda, received rainfall, bringing relief to residents.

The situation is in line with the monsoon transition phase, which typically brings rain or thunderstorms.

Alert status is issued when daily maximum temperatures range between 35 and 37°C, while Level 2 (heatwave) refers to temperatures between 37 and 40°C.

Both levels are recorded when such temperatures persist for at least three consecutive days.
