SHAH ALAM, March 27 — The public has called for stricter enforcement and time limits on the use of firecrackers and fireworks to ensure safety and public order throughout the festive season.
While such activities remain a traditional way to enliven celebrations, their use must be regulated to avoid disturbing the community, particularly at night.
Muhammad Al Hafiz Abdul Rahman, 39, a private sector employee, said time limits on firecracker use should be carefully observed to keep the activity safe without diminishing the festive atmosphere.
“Firecrackers and fireworks are synonymous with festive seasons, but they must be used responsibly and should not negatively affect others. I suggest restricting the timing to no later than midnight. Consider parents with young children or the elderly, as loud noises can disrupt their sleep and emotional well-being,” he told Media Selangor.

Meanwhile, Nor Ashikin Mohd Zakaria, 39, said community-level supervision should also be strengthened, such as through local neighbourhood committees.
“In my area, activities are allowed only until 11 pm. Parents also need to monitor their children rather than relying solely on authorities. Celebrating with firecrackers and fireworks is fun for families and relatives, but it must be done in moderation and overly aggressive firecrackers should be avoided,” she said.

For teacher Zety Zana Musthafa Kamal, 52, discipline and mutual respect within the community are crucial to ensure activities remain within safe limits.
“Yes, there should be control over timing. Village heads or mosque committees could advise residents not to overdo it. Police should also conduct frequent patrols, especially in ‘hotspot’ areas where firecrackers are commonly used,” she said.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Muhammad Harith Ahmad Shahrani expressed concern about the easy accessibility of firecrackers.
“They are sold widely, making it easy for anyone, including children, to buy them. I hope the police will check permits. If sales are too free, the risk of accidents or serious injuries increases,” he said.

Recently, Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming instructed the Fire and Rescue Department and local authorities to review the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for temporary fireworks stalls nationwide.
The directive follows several incidents of fires at fireworks stalls reported in locations including Georgetown, Penang and Johor Bahru, causing property damage.
