KAJANG, March 26 — Upgrade and maintenance works at Pasar Kajang will be expedited to ensure improved facilities without affecting traders.
Kajang state assemblyman David Cheong Kian Young said he will hold a meeting with traders and relevant parties in the near future to coordinate the project's implementation.
The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) had previously approved RM15 million to rebuild the market, but the proposal was changed to an upgrade following objections from traders.
“This market will not be rebuilt. We will only carry out upgrades so that traders do not lose their source of income,” he said.
Cheong added that over 100 traders are currently operating at the market, while the second floor is underutilised and mostly used for storage. As such, efforts will be made to attract more visitors to the upper floor in order to revitalise business activity.
In addition, residents and traders have raised concerns about insufficient parking, with proposals to increase parking spaces if there is surplus funding.
In 2024, KPKT allocated RM180 million for the construction of 12 public markets nationwide, including RM77 million for four projects in Selangor, one of which is Pasar Kajang.
The market also received an additional RM850,000 for upgrade works, including repairs to toilets, replacement of cables, installation of floor tiles, and repainting.
Pasar Kajang, located near Sungai Jelok on Jalan Changkat, is the main market in the area and a focal point for residents to obtain fresh produce and daily necessities.
