Indonesia's Mt Marapi erupts, spews ash 600m into air

JAKARTA, Feb 6 — Indonesia’s Mount Marapi, located in West Sumatra province, erupted yesterday evening, sending an ash column as high as 600 metres above the summit.

ANTARA news agency reported volcano observation post (PGA) officer Teguh Firmansyah as saying that the eruption occurred at 6.19pm local time, with the ash column observed drifting towards the northeast.

“The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.2mm and lasted about 34 seconds,” he said.

Earlier, at 11.27am, the PGA also reported that the volcano had erupted, but the height of the ash column could not be observed because it was obscured by clouds. The eruption lasted around 25 seconds, with a maximum amplitude of 25.9mm.

Currently, Mount Marapi remains at Level II (alert) status.
