Physics Nobel laureate Clarke slams US research funding cuts

WASHINGTON, Oct 8 — Newly named Nobel laureate in Physics John Clarke sharply criticised Donald Trump administration’s cuts to United States (US) research funding, calling them an "immensely serious problem," reported the German Press Agency (dpa).

"This will cripple much of US science research. It is going to be disastrous if this continues.

"Assuming that the present administration finally comes to an end, it may take a decade to get back to where we were, say, half a year ago," the 83-year-old said during a press conference.

Clarke was awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, alongside colleagues Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis, for groundbreaking work in quantum mechanics.

In recent months, the US administration has implemented budget cuts and staff reductions at many universities and research institutions.
