Melaka Fama to assist in marketing excess agricultural produce, avoid dumping

MELAKA, March 27 — The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) in Melaka is ready to help market excess agricultural produce from other states to ensure that the income of entrepreneurs under it is not further affected.

Fama Board of Directors member Datuk Ghazale Muhamad said the dumping of excess agricultural produce was due to the movement restrictions to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said movement restrictions during the enforcement of the movement control order (MCO) also caused some agricultural products such as pineapples and strawberries to be less in demand, thus causing dumping.

“Like in January, we bought Morris pineapples in Johor and resold them at farmers' markets or other programmes under Fama at a cheaper price.

“We were also informed that Cameron Highlands strawberries are also facing the same problem due to lack of demand from some sectors such as hospitality. So, to help these entrepreneurs, we will buy the products and market them in the state,” he told reporters after attending the Jualan MyRakyat programme here today.
