Killing of ex-Mardi researcher: Main suspect among three nabbed — Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 — A main suspect was among three detained over alleged involvement in the robbery and killing of a former researcher of the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) in an incident in Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, here, on Sunday (November 29).

Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Huzir Mohamed they were all detained in three separate raids in Jalan Genting Klang and Jalan Air Panas, here, and Jalan Rinching, Semenyih, early this morning.

He said two men were detained at 3.30am and 4.30am, and their arrests led to the detention of another man, aged 23 years, believed to be the main suspect, in a raid at 5 am.

“The police managed to extract a confession from the main suspect as a result of further investigations. Police believed the confession by the main suspect, caught in Semenyih, that he was responsible for hacking the ex-researcher,’’ he told a media conference in Bukit Aman, here, yesterday. 

He also said the police would apply for a remand order on the three suspects yesterday.

He said the police were still hunting another suspect, a male by the name of T Sugu, 27, who was believed to be involved in the case.

‘’The remand of 10 individuals who were detained prior to this have been extended by seven days until December 6,’’ he said.

Hence, a total 13 men had been detained, to date, under the case.

On Monday, the media reported that Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin announced that 10 individuals, between 20 to 29 years old, who were believed to be involved in the robbery, were detained since the day of the incident.

In the incident at 3.30am, Dr Wan Hassan Wan Embong, 71, was killed during a robbery at his house while his wife Sarifah Yusof, 70, was injured on the right hand.

He was believed to have been slashed with a parang when he tried to fight off two unmasked men who broke in from a kitchen window of the two-storey bungalow.
