HULU LANGAT, March 7 — The state government will coordinate maintenance and dredging works at the retention pond at Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS) to prevent the risk of recurring floods following prolonged heavy rain.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the existing pond was found to be shallow and needs to be deepened to ensure the drainage system functions more effectively.
“So, we will deepen it to avoid the possibility of flooding in the UIS area, as we recognise that this location is among the areas where water tends to accumulate or flow.
“InsyaAllah (God willing), together with YB Sany (Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan), the state government will act quickly to help resolve this issue. UIS will coordinate the appointment of contractors because the asset is located on university grounds.
"I will inform the Vice-Chancellor. I will (also) help ensure the retention pond is deepened and properly maintained to make sure UIS is not affected by heavy rain as happened several years ago,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking to the media after the Qiamullail Perdana programme, sahur and congregational Subuh prayers at Masjid Al-Azhar in UIS this morning.
On Thursday (March 5), a flash flood occurred at the university's main entrance following continuous heavy rain.
The incident caused concern among UIS' personnel and student body after a prolonged downpour overflowed the retention pond, leading to a rapid rise in water levels around the campus.
In August 2022, prolonged rainfall also caused flash floods on campus, including the administration building parking area, Masjid Al-Azhar, and student residences.
