SHAH ALAM, March 6 — An illegal e-waste processing syndicate was uncovered through an operation by the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) in Jeram yesterday.
The operation, held from 9am to 2pm and involving around 50 enforcers from various MPKS units and departments, comprised inspections on four factories in the area.
Checks revealed that a site in Batu 21 was dismantling cables and processing furniture and metal without authorities’ approval.
The plant was issued with two compounds for conducting business without a licence, under the MPKS Trade, Business and Industrial Licensing By-Laws 2007.
“Other than compounds, a stop-work notice was also issued and the premises has been shut,” read an MPKS statement.
During the same operation, MPKS seized equipment at the plant, including a cable-cutting machine, grinder, digital scale, metal cutters, and a forklift.

Another factory, believed to have been processing electronic recyclables on Jalan Simpang Tiga Jeram, was also inspected, but it had been emptied and was no longer operational.
“Though not operational, the premises was still shut down, with the Buildings Control Department issuing a compound and a notice under Section 70(1) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.
“At the third location on Jalan Klang Sungai Janggut in Batu 14 1/2, checks revealed plastic recyclables processing plants emptied and non-operational,” it said.
MPKS shut down the premises and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), along with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd, checked the owner of the water meter and seized the device.
The council said integrated operations such as this one would continue to ensure all business and industrial activities in Kuala Selangor comply with the law.
