Indonesia begins evacuating citizens from Iran via Azerbaijan

JAKARTA, March 6 — Indonesia will begin the first phase of evacuating its citizens from Iran today via Azerbaijan following rising tensions in the Middle East.

ANTARA news agency quoted the Foreign Ministry’s Protection of Indonesian Citizens acting director Heni Hamidah as saying that 32 Indonesians were scheduled to be evacuated in the initial phase, though the number might change depending on developments on the ground.

“The evacuation of Indonesian citizens in Iran will begin gradually today, and the first phase will be carried out through Azerbaijan,” she said today.

Heni added that the evacuation plan was prepared after closely monitoring the evolving security situation, including identifying the safest and most appropriate evacuation routes.

Concerning subsequent evacuation phases, she said the Indonesian government would make decisions later, after assessing the latest security developments and considering input from the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran.

Heni also assured that the embassy continues to maintain communication with Indonesians in Iran, particularly those in Tehran, to ensure their safety.
