Eight arrested over brawl at Meru police station

SHAH ALAM, March 5 — Eight people involved in a brawl at the Meru police station on Monday have been arrested, said Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar.

He said the commotion is believed to have stemmed from a dispute between two groups over security control in a housing area, Kosmo reported.

He said the suspects, aged between 28 and 41, knew one another and were involved in a secret society gang.

They were arrested in three separate operations and have been remanded until March 6 and 7.

“Checks found that some of the suspects have prior records involving violent crimes like murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, housebreaking and rioting.

“One of the suspects is also wanted under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Crime Act 1959,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters here today.

Shazeli was quoted as saying that during the brawl, the suspects were under the influence of alcohol, while one tested positive for benzodiazepine.

He said two police officers who were at the crime scene were both uninjured.

“We also seized a helmet and iron pipe that were used during the commotion,” Shazeli added.

The case is being investigated under Sections 148, 324 and 427 of the Penal Code, Section 90 of the Police Act 1967, and Section 6 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
