IAEA urges restraint to avoid nuclear safety risks in Middle East

VIENNA, March 1 — The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has urged restraint to avoid any nuclear safety risks to people in the Middle East, saying it is closely monitoring developments in the region, reported Xinhua.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), it said that it is in permanent contact with countries in the region, and so far, there is no evidence of any radiological impact, adding that it will continue monitoring the situation.

Similarly, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger posted on X that via a phone call with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, she was informed that no nuclear facilities in Iran have been struck so far.

Meinl-Reisinger called on all sides to return to the negotiating table after the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday.

"We have already taken action in recent days to enable technical talks on the Iranian nuclear programme in Vienna and remain ready to keep this option for de-escalation open," she said.
