SHAH ALAM, Feb 24 — The Marine Police Force (PPM) Region One managed to cripple cigarette smuggling activities when it seized boxes of various types of cigarettes believed to be untaxed worth RM1,782,000 in two separate operations under Ops Taring Landai early yesterday.
Its commander ACP Jaffri Bidin said that in the first operation, they arrested a 24-year-old man driving a white van in a suspicious manner near the Saujana Putera Toll Plaza at the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE).
In the second operation, the PPM detained a 26-year-old van driver at Kilometre 5.2 of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) (AH141) heading towards the Bukit Raja Toll Plaza.
"Upon inspecting both vehicles, we found boxes of various types of untaxed cigarettes. The two men also failed to provide any documents for the items they were transporting,” he said in a statement today.
Jaffri added that the seized items were handed over to investigating officers from the Kuala Langat and Shah Alam police headquarters, while the two suspects would be investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for illegal possession or storage of uncustomed or prohibited goods.
