SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — Pollutant removal works are underway at Sungai Kabul in Semenyih after a report of abnormal odour on Thursday, said the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS).
It said on-site operations have been non-stop, considering the large volume of pollutant, estimated at 50 cubic metres, constraints of storage tanks, and access to the location.
LUAS said Indah Water Konsortium (Cyberjaya branch), Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd and contractors are using 10 tankers with capacities of between 5 and 10 cubic metres for the cleanup.
“Up to 1pm today, suction and cleanup progress is estimated to have reached 70 per cent,” the authority said.
Manual cleanup is also underway to ensure the affected locations are free of pollutant residue or remnants that could pose risks.
“The completion of suction and cleanup works at this site is expected to be today,” it added.
LUAS has also deployed anti-odour and pollution flow controls in affected locations along Sungai Kabul, by periodically placing and replacing oil booms and oil pads, and adding activated charcoal (AC).
“Three oil boom units, three boxes of oil pads and 765kg of AC have been used to prevent and control pollution in the river,” it said.
LUAS explained that intensive works on site at Sungai Kabul and Sungai Semenyih will be continued to completion.
“The situation is under control,” it said in the statement.
Also present to monitor works at the site were LUAS River and Ocean Bank Management Department chief assistant director Haslina Amer and Air Selangor chief executive officer Adam Saffian Ghazali.
