Autoshops in residential areas ordered to relocate to light industrial zones

SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — Autoshops in residential areas in Selangor have been ordered to move to light industrial zones so as to not disturb residents, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.

He said this would address traffic congestion, noise pollution, and the overuse of public parking lots by autoshop customers.

“These relocations will be done in stages, with reminder notices issued to workshop operators first.

“New applications would only be approved if the business premises are in light industrial zones,” he said, as reported by The Star.

According to Ng, the decision was made upon receiving complaints from residents about engine noise and autoshop customers using public parking spaces.

“Among the solutions is to put the workshops in light industrial zones, where layouts can be better planned for equipment, workspaces, and storage,” he added.

He said existing operators have been briefed about the plan and a large number are compliant, but some have refused to relocate.

“Local authorities will give workshop operators a reasonable period to move by the agreed-upon deadline.

“But if they are still stubborn and don’t move, councils will have to act according to legal provisions,” Ng said without specifying the laws.

Meanwhile, Subang Jaya Deputy Mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali said the Subang Jaya Local Draft Plan 2035 (Amendment 1) details that autoshops can only be set up at industrial zones.

He said the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) won’t issue new licences for autoshops in mixed-development areas.

“Seven temporary permits have been issued in Taman Puncak Jalil and Taman Lestari Perdana in Seri Kembangan to standardise existing operations. MBSJ’s Enforcement Department has also issued 379 notices to autoshops to relocate in Subang Jaya,” Zulkurnain added.

In Shah Alam, then-mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Yatim said the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) held talks with autoshop operators in November last year.

“Until July 2025, 545 workshop applications were received by MBSA. From that amount, 177 were approved, 142 were given temporary conditional licences, 11 were deferred and 215 were rejected,” Fauzi said.
