KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 — Police are allowing the ownership and import of Pop-Pop and Happy Boom brand of fireworks for Chinese New Year, but this is subject to strict criteria and permits from district police chiefs, said Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
He said the import, sale, storage and use of fireworks fall under the Explosives Act 1957, the Explosives Rules 1923 and the Minor Offences Act 1955.
“Firecrackers are categorised as explosives under Section 2 of the Explosives Act 1957 as their components include substances that can explode or produce explosive materials or chemicals that generate explosive sounds.
“According to the 2025 Explosives (Prohibition) Notification, 45 types of Pop-Pop and Happy Boom fireworks are permitted for ownership and import by the home minister.
“However, this permission is subject to permits issued by district police chiefs and compliance with prescribed specifications or conditions,” he said in a statement today.
He said police regulations are aimed at maintaining public order and preventing injuries, fires and disturbances caused by the misuse of firecrackers.
Khalid said action can be taken under the Explosives Act 1957, adding that enforcement is meant to protect public safety.
He advised the public to light fireworks only in open areas and to follow safety rules to avoid disturbing others.
