SHAH ALAM, Dec 24 — Eateries in commercial areas under the Shah Alam City Council’s (MBSA) jurisdiction are required to have two garbage bins from next year, to improve solid waste management and support environmental conservation.
The local council said in a Facebook post that one bin would be for food waste while the other is for non-food waste.
“Sorted food waste will be collected by a contractor appointed by the council before it is sent to composting centres to be processed into compost,” said MBSA.
The council said waste sorting in eateries could reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, which supports a circular economy in urban solid waste management.
The move is also in line with MBSA’s efforts to establish more systematic, environmentally friendly, and sustainable waste management practices in areas under its jurisdiction.
