Singapore to regulate sale of flick knives, knuckledusters

SINGAPORE, Jan 7 — Singapore will regulate the sale of flick knives and knuckledusters when the Guns, Explosives, and Weapons Control Act comes into effect in the first half of this year, the Parliament was told today.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Sun Xueling said this is in addition to the six types of knives and similar offensive weapons already regulated for sale under the Arms and Explosives Act, including daggers, swords, spears, spearheads, bayonets, and dangerous bows and arrows.

As of November last year, there have been 129 cases of murder, attempted murder, robbery, rioting, and serious injuries involving knives, and this figure is comparable to the number of cases in the preceding three years.

“Between 2021 and 2023, there was an average of 133 cases a year. None of these crimes occurred at a place of worship, with the sole exception of the knife attack at St Joseph’s Church in November 2024,” she said.

Sun added that the Home Affairs Ministry does not track cases based on whether the offenders had mental health issues.

She was responding to questions regarding the assessment of recently reported knife-related crimes and measures to provide personal safety and assurances at places of worship.
