SUBANG JAYA, Dec 9 — The Sungai Klang rehabilitation project, which involves cleaning, deepening, and widening works, is expected to be fully completed within the next five years.
State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim said the project is currently being carried out in Block Three, covering areas around Taman Sri Muda and Kota Kemuning.
“The Sungai Klang rehabilitation project will take another five years to complete. It is currently ongoing in Block Three and will continue to other areas.
“We have encountered an enormous amount of rubbish. Out of four metres of river depth, three metres consist solely of waste. This includes items like abandoned cars, cabinets, beds, and many more,” he said.
Izham was speaking to the press after observing the suckermouth catfish-catching initiative offering RM1 per kg at one of Sungai Kuyoh’s tributaries in Seri Kembangan yesterday.
The Sungai Klang rehabilitation project comprises three main engineering components: design (including hydrological and hydraulic analysis, riverbank repair works, slope protection, and flood barrier requirements), construction, and follow-up maintenance.
Estimated to cost RM700 million, it spans 12 zones across four key blocks of flood-prone areas along the river, starting from Mid Valley in Kuala Lumpur to Port Klang.
In 2018, the state government launched the Selangor Maritime Gateway project, managed by Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd, as an initiative to clean, rehabilitate, and develop the heavily polluted river.
