KOTA KINABALU, July 1 — Two more flood relief centres have been opened in Sabah to house evacuees, following continuous rain in several districts on the west coast of the state since yesterday.
The Sabah Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a statement said as at 4pm, there were four relief centres in the state, housing 328 evacuees from 105 families.
A new relief centre was opened at Kampung Tutu Selupoh Community Hall, Tuaran, accommodating 29 people from eight families. Another relief centre at Kampung Bontoi Community Hall, Tamparuli, shelters 18 people from five families.
“The rain in Tuaran since yesterday caused surrounding areas to flood, and residents have been evacuated to two relief centres.
“However, due to the increase in the water level, the District Disaster Management Committee decided to open two more relief centres,” read the statement.
The number of evacuees in Penampang grew to 165 people from 67 families, who are being accommodated at the Penampang Cultural Hall, compared with the 112 people from 40 families reported this morning.
In Putatan, 116 people from 25 families are sheltering at Dewan Sri Putatan, a significant increase from only two people this morning.
