Media plea for international intervention to protect journalists in conflict zones

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — The media fraternity gathered in Malaysia’s capital today has pleaded for intervention from the international community, especially those vested with the authority and obligation to safeguard journalists working in conflict zones.

Al Jazeera Malaysia bureau chief Sameer Allawi pointed out that over 200 journalists have lost their lives in Gaza, Palestine since October 2023, yet no measures have been taken against the perpetrators.

"When journalists fall victim, the reality is extinguished, and our lives are imperilled. If the media cannot endure, neither can we, particularly in these challenging times," he said to Bernama at a gathering in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day.

The gathering, an inaugural event organised by Al Jazeera Malaysia, was attended by nearly 50 individuals, including members of the local and international media, journalist associations, human rights organisations, and non-governmental organisations.

Sameer further implored those concerned with human rights and the unfair treatment of journalists to rise up and defend journalists worldwide, particularly in conflict areas.

"This is especially vital in Palestine, where the brutality of the occupation has led to the deaths of journalists, families, children, and the devastation of hospitals and schools.

"I dare say that the international community is falling short of its duty. They are neglecting their responsibilities to safeguard journalists and uphold media freedom universally, especially in conflict zones, and specifically in Palestine," he said.
