MAFS suggests using subsidised imported rice at govt premises

BENTONG, Sept 29 — The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry will propose using subsidised imported rice at government premises to increase the domestic supply of local rice.

These premises would include hospitals, police training centres, military camps and school hostels.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said he will discuss the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Finance Minister, on Monday.

Mohamad said the move is expected to boost the availability of local rice in the market.

“Government premises would buy imported rice at a not-too-high (subsidised) price, maybe between RM32 and RM35 per bag,” he said after participating in the Sembang Santai Perpaduan talk in Simpang Pelangai here tonight.

Meanwhile, Mohamad said India is expected to make the decision next week on whether to continue exporting white rice to Malaysia.
