Malaysian, Indonesian customs departments to strengthen collaboration

JAKARTA, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- Customs officials from Malaysia and Indonesia recently gathered in Medan, North Sumatra, to review past efforts, address challenges, and pave the way for future collaborations to enhance cross-border trade.

The Malaysian delegation was led by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department Director General Datuk Zazuli Johan, and the Indonesian contingent was  led by the Customs and Excise Director General Askolani.

During the 19th bilateral meeting, both agencies discussed making customs procedures better, aiming to strengthen rules, combat violations and facilitate smoother trade processes.

They delved into an array of customs, supervision, and excise matters, including topics such as good governance practices, capacity building, enforcement, and the oversight of narcotics-related activities.

The Coordinated Customs Patrol Indonesia-Malaysia or Patkor Kastima and the Joint Task Force on Narcotics received special attention during the discussions, the Indonesian Customs and Excise said in a statement.

The Indonesian Customs and Excise also shared data and information on its customs and excise laboratory as the Royal Malaysian Customs Department is planning to set up a similar lab.

As part of the bilateral meeting series, a study visit to the Medan Class II Customs and Excise Laboratory was conducted.
