PETALING JAYA, Feb 14 — Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman Elizabeth Wong will help several women who were tested positive during the human papillomavirus (HPV) PCR test for cervical cancer in Damansara Damai here yesterday to seek further treatment.

She said the women will be referred to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and would undergo treatment until they are fully recovered.

“They will be sent to UMMC and the treatment cost would be fully borne by the ROSE Foundation. We will also follow up on their conditions and ensure their well-being is taken care of.

“Today (yesterday), the response was encouraging and I do not expect women nowadays to be more concerned because the cervical screening was never given much attention,” she told SelangorKini.

Elizabeth added she planned to organise a second screening programme in May thus helping more women to benefit from the programme and prevent cervical cancer.

State executive councillor for public health Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud had officiated the programme at Dewan Komuniti MBPJ in Damansara Damai, yesterday.

The programme was organised in collaboration with Pusat Wanita Berdaya (PWB), the ROSE Foundation and the Malaysia Women Marathon.

Meanwhile, Bukit Lanjan PWB coordinator Juliana Abu Bakar said the screening programme aims to increase awareness among women to prevent cervical cancer.

“The free screening is for those who are in the low-income group (B40) and those who stay at the low-cost flat.

“Based on a survey, we found that the majority of them had never undergone the screening,” she said.
