Newly sworn-in MPSepang panel vows better flood mitigation

SEPANG, Jan 9 — The Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) said it has identified 14 flood hotspots and formulated comprehensive mitigation plans to reduce the risk of recurring floods in high-risk areas.

MPSepang president Ani Ahmad said the council is working with the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), Sepang District and Land Office, and relevant technical agencies to boost integrated flood management.

“We have identified 14 flood mitigation hotspots and various steps are and will be implemented through close cooperation with involved parties to reduce the impact of floods on residents.

“This action plan will also be monitored periodically by the Infrastructure Committee, which meets every month,” she told a press conference after the swearing-in ceremony for MPSepang councillors for the 2026-2027 term here today.

Ani said that among mitigation measures to be prioritised are the construction of flood control structures like flapgates and breakwaters, and the periodic cleaning of drains and drainage systems.

She added that MPSepang is taking a proactive approach with more frequent site visits, and won’t only take action after public complaints.

“This approach is important to minimise recurrent issues, especially involving solid waste management, flood hotspots, and infrastructure maintenance.

“We want the people to truly feel the government’s presence, thus our work culture must be transformed so it aligns with the values of resilience, diligence, and people-based approach,” she said.

Ani also urged MPSepang councillors to change their approach to work, in line with the public service’s transformation agenda, for the people’s well-being.

Earlier today, 24 MPSepang councillors were appointed for the 2026-2027 term. Their service began January 1, 2026, and will end on December 31, 2027.

The MPSepang president said councillors were appointed based on allocations given to Selangor local authorities under the Local Government Act 1976.

“This trust and responsibility is significant and important as councillors are community leaders in their respective areas.

“The people want councillors who are always alert and centre problems and issues related to service and management,” she said.

Ani added that councillors must equip themselves with the knowledge and understanding of their functions, roles and duties, be aware of local government affairs, and know the goals of the local councils and policies of the state and federal governments.

“Councillors must also take notice of local residents’ problems, find out about local, national and global issues, and equip themselves with knowledge and understanding about their roles from a legal aspect, so the decisions they make have a strong basis and don’t go against government policies,” she said.

According to Ani, MPSepang has prepared key performance indicator (KPI) assessments this year for councillors, comprising five main components — community programmes, administrative management, green neighbourhoods, environmental programmes, and public health.

“These components have their breakdowns according to programmes that will be implemented. To appreciate all parties’ involvement, each component carries marks and will be assessed at year end (followed by an awards ceremony),” she said.

Previously, state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said 288 new members for Selangor’s 12 local councils will all be sworn in by tomorrow.
