MBPJ refines report on councillor zone distribution before submitting to exco

PETALING JAYA, Dec 12 — The report concerning the distribution of zones for Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillors is currently being refined before it is submitted to the state executive councillor for local government for further action.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato' Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the report will be sent once a thorough review of the proposed restructuring has been completed.

“There is indeed a proposal for rezoning because it is acknowledged that each area differs in size; some small, some large, but we have yet to hold a detailed discussion.

“However, all councillors agree if we proceed with the rezoning. Therefore, discussions will be held after the new appointments, as the current leadership term will end soon, not long before the report is submitted,” he said.

Zahri was speaking to the media during the launch of the early publicity programme for the draft Petaling Jaya Local Plan (Replacement) proposal today.

Previously, MBPJ Zone 24 Councillor Farhan Shah Ridzuan proposed that the council review the distribution of councillor zones to ensure a more balanced workload and improve service delivery efficiency for residents.

He said the current zone distribution does not reflect the actual workload due to significant differences in population size, land area, and land use between zones.

This imbalance affects the effectiveness of councillors, particularly in terms of on-ground presence, response rates to public complaints, and infrastructure maintenance.

Following this, Media Selangor reported that state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim requested that Zahri submit a detailed report on the distribution of councillor zones within MBPJ's jurisdiction to assess whether restructuring the division of areas is warranted.

He added that the report must first be examined before any decision is made.

Ng noted that a review may be carried out if necessary to ensure councillors can provide more efficient services to taxpayers without being burdened by an excessively large workload.
