SHAH ALAM, Nov 14 — Selangor is set to expand its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiatives to better prepare youth and school leavers for high-skilled, high-income careers.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the effort, carried out under the Smart Selangor Technical and Professional Skills Initiative (Iktisass), also supports the state’s transition towards Industry 4.0 and aligns with the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2).
“The Iktisass programme, led by the Selangor Technical Development Centre (STDC), plays an important role in the state’s economic development by equipping school leavers and youth with technical and entrepreneurial skills to meet industry needs, contributing to Selangor’s high-income skilled workforce.
“In view of this, the state government is allocating RM20.48 million for the Iktisass programme next year to ensure TVET achieves its goal of producing a skilled workforce,” he said when tabling the 2026 Selangor Budget in the State Legislative Assembly today.
For this year, over 1,000 students have graduated from STDC’s Kuala Selangor campus with Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level Two to Four qualifications and other advanced certificates.
Additionally, more than 800 students obtained professional certifications from STDC’s Shah Alam campus, involving collaboration with global industry leaders like Siemens, Apple, KNX Mendix, Dassault Systèmes, Festo, and Google.
Amirudin added that efforts to enhance the quality of Iktisass graduates include improving study modules and diversifying courses to ensure students remain competitive.
Focus areas include digital technology and advanced manufacturing, with the development of industry incubators to drive Industry 4.0 transformation.
Meanwhile, STDC will also launch the Selangor Women TVET Programme next year, following a collaboration with Guangdong Women’s Polytechnic in China in September last year.
“This initiative is designed to empower women through TVET skills, in line with the state government’s efforts to develop skilled female workers, particularly youth, single mothers, and those re-entering the workforce.
“Certification will cover engineering, digital technology, automation, renewable energy, culinary arts, and technical services relevant to industry needs,” he said.
The Menteri Besar said the state government hopes the programme will increase female participation in technical fields and help reduce the gender gap in high-skilled employment.
The certification programme alone will receive a RM10.5 million allocation, which is expected to benefit over 2,000 Selangor residents.
